Laughter Therapy
What is Laughter Therapy?
Laughter therapy is a modern exercise involving prolonged voluntary laughter. The concept allows for anyone to laugh for no reason, without relying on humour, jokes or comedy.
Laughter therapy combines laughter, music, deep breathing exercises, relaxation and gentle exercises. This brings more oxygen to the body and the brain which makes one feel more energetic and healthy.
The concept of Laughter therapy is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter if done with willingness. One gets the same physiological and psychological benefits.
Why Laughter Therapy?
In order to get the scientifically proven health benefits of laughter, we need to laugh continuously for at least 10-15 minutes. Since in Laughter Therapy we do laughter as an exercise, we can prolong our laughter as long as we want. On the other hand natural laughter comes for just a few seconds here and there and there is not enough physiological and biochemical changes in our body.
To reap the health benefits of laughter, laughter has to be loud and deep coming from the diaphragm. It should be a belly laugh. It might not be socially acceptable to laugh loudly, but laughter therapy clubs provide a safe environment where one can laugh loudly and heartily without any social implication. Laughter therapy is a fun and healthy exercise regime, with beneficial effects for the body, mind and emotions. Like with any form of aerobic exercise it should not be performed by people with medical problems without first taking advice from their medical practitioner.
Natural laughter that courses through our life depends on many reasons and conditions, but there are not many reasons which make us laugh. That means that we are leaving laughter to chance, it may happen it may not. In contrast in the Laughter Therapy club we are not leaving laughter to chance, but doing it out of commitment. This is the way of getting the health benefits of laughter.
Benefits of laughter:
Laughter releases endorphins, giving us the “feel good factor”.
Act as aerobic exercise and is “internal jogging”.
Unleashes inhibitions, breaks down barriers.
Great team building tool – encourages better communication.
Helps boost our immune system which helps us resist disease.
Tones muscles, improves respiration and circulation.
Encourages positive thinking and creativity.
Relaxes the whole body by reducing stress and tension.
The weekly Laughter Therapy Group Sessions are held at the Kloof Village Mall every Tuesday – between 2 and 3pm.
